Qld: Tributes for Mills Sister Aunty Rita
RITA MILLS, one of the famous Torres Strait islander singing trio The Mills Sisters, has died.
Queensland Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy LIDDY CLARK says
Ms MILLS, better known as AUNTY RITA, died yesterday aged 69.
RITA and her sisters CESSA and INA, from Naghir Island in the Torres Strait, started
performing traditional island songs in 1975 and went on to worldwide acclaim.
They were a runaway success at World Expo `88 in Brisbane, and opened Australian tours
for acts such as TINA TURNER and CHARLEY PRIDE.
Ms MILLS had a long battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
