CD ISLANDERS WIN BATTLE OF CELLAR DWELLERS.(Sports)

OK, so the Capital District Islanders can't finish first in the American Hockey League's Southern Division. They know that.

And they can't finish in one of the top five places in the division and thereby gain one of the playoff berths in the upcoming Calder Cup playoffs. They know that, too.

But the Islanders in this, their first season in the AHL, can avoid finishing last in the seven-team Southern Division. They took a big step toward realizing that goal Sunday night by tripping the Newmarket Saints 6-3 before 2,285 at Houston Field House.

Sean LeBrun had two goals and Derek Laxdal had three assists (one less than the team record) to help CD (26-40-9, 61 points) go two points ahead of Newmarket (25-43-9) in the "Race to Avoid the Cellar."
