Fed: Telstra denies bungle but admits mistakes possible

Telstra has denied it mistakenly published hundreds of silent numbers in the White Pages.

Sydney's Daily Telegraph claims a mistake in Telstra's data entry systems resultedin the numbers appearing in the online and hard copy versions of this year's directory.

Telstra spokesman MICHAEL HERSKOPE says the report is wrong but admits mistakes are possible.

He says while there's always a chance of a mistake being made, checks are in placeto ensure Telstra customers' initial instructions are followed.

Mr HERSKOPE says Telstra expects a minute fraction of requests that are in error, addingthe chance of an error is one in 10,000.

But NSW Council of Civil Liberties president CAMERON MURPHY says if the mix-up didhappen, it's an irreparable breach of people's privacy.
