Captain Graeme Smith hit a confident century in an unbroken 236-run opening stand to give South Africa a commanding start to the second test against Bangladesh on Friday.
Smith hit 15 boundaries to reach an unbeaten 133 at tea_ reaching his century in just 127 balls _ and paired with Neil McKenzie (95) as the visitors cruised to 236-0.
His century moved him past 5000 test runs.
The more patient McKenzie brought up his half century off 124 balls with eight boundaries, as the hosts toiled on an unresponsive pitch at Chittagong's Divisional Stadium.
South Africa won the toss and decided to bat first, and after just two sessions looked to have put a lock on the series, having won a competitive opening test by five wickets.
Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful used seven bowlers in a fruitless bid to dislodge South Africa's opening pair.
South Africa replaced offspinner Johan Botha with left-arm spinner Robin Peterson in the only change from the first test.
Bangladesh boosted its spin attack, replacing out-of-form batsman Habibul Bashar with left-arm spinner Abdul Razzak.
