VW plans sales onslaught in U.S.

It plans to slash development time and platforms and sell enough vehicles to become the world's third largest automaker.

Ferdinand Piech kept jabbing his hand into his jacket pocket as he sped down the road test-driving the '99 Jetta. He dug and dug until his hand started to bleed. Startled passengers quickly handed him a tissue, and looked quizzically at the Volkswagen chairman. A tailor's needle left in the suit was picking him and Piech was not about to ignore it.
